Veterans Petition For Kirigiti International Stadium To Be Renamed

A war veterans’ group is seeking to rename Kirigiti International stadium saying that its location is a historic site for the fight for independence in Kenya.

The Kiambu County Mau Mau Liberation War Veterans Association today presented a petition to the Kiambu County Assembly requesting a name change of the newly constructed stadium.

The Association led by Mau Mau veteran Gitu wa Kahengeri, say that the ground is a historic and iconic site for the fight for independence in Kenya.

‘We are therefore petitioning the Assembly to consider renaming the stadium from Kirigiti International stadium to ‘Mau Mau Kirigiti International Stadium’ or ‘Kirigiti Mau Mau International Stadium,’ read part of the petition.

In the Petition, the Association brings to the attention of the Assembly that the grounds were initially referred to as Kiharo Gia Thathi-ini which is Kikuyu for the cradle of resistance wars and vigorous agitation of freedom against British colonialism in Kenya.

The petitioners add that Kiharo Gia Thath
i-ini carries a rich history which should be recognized as such in honour of the hundreds of Mau Mau fighters who were committed to various atrocities while being detained there.

Kirigiti International Stadium construction has been fully funded by the national government at an estimated cost of Sh600 million and has a sitting capacity of about 15,000 and is currently 95 per cent complete. The stadium is located at Kiambu Sub County in Kiambu County.
