Policy Brief, February 2023: Men and Boys Key partners for eliminating Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting (FGM/C)

Plan International in West and Central Africa has been adapting interventions aimed at addressing FGM/C in its development, humanitarian and post[1]crisis programming response through partnerships with men and boys. One of these projects is the “Saving Girls from Female Genital Mutilation”. This project encourages men and boys to become directly involved in the fight against female genital mutilation and violence against women and girls. This includes through intergenerational dialogues, celebrations of alternative initiation rites, promotion of alternative income generation activities for women responsible for performing the initiation (cutting) rites and public awareness sessions on the effect of FGM/C. Approximately 10,368 men are involved in the project’s activities in 80 districts covered by the project. The project also identified some village chiefs as champion for the elimination of FGM.
