Mathioya National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) has launched a programme of distributing desks to local Junior Secondary Schools (JSS). The area MP Edwin Mugo has said the schools hosting junior secondary schools were experiencing shortage of some of the key equipment like desks thus affecting quality of education offered in the institutions. He stated that all the schools in the constituency which are hosting junior secondary will get desks from NG-CDF kitty before mid this year. Mugo spoke when he gave 60 desks to Kamune primary school which is among schools hosting junior secondary in the constituency. He noted that, once all monies allocated for NG-CDF kitty will be released, they will move to construct laboratories and help learners from visiting nearby secondary schools to access laboratories for practical teachings. ‘In three months’, time, we hope funds for the NG-CDF will be released and we have plans of constructing laboratories to support practical training in the JSS. There are plans to convert some classrooms which are not of use to be laboratories,’ he explained. The MP underscored the NG-CDF kitty saying it will be of great support in implementation of Competency Based Curriculum. ‘Some of teething challenges facing effective implementation of CBC will be solved through funding by NG-CDF and that’s why we call upon the Treasury to hastily release the remaining funds,’ Mugo remarked. At the same time, the MP said they are also distributing water tanks to a number of schools to help in harvesting of water especially at this period the area is experiencing rains. ‘Some local schools have suffered for lack of water forcing learners to spend some of their time going to fetch water from rivers. The NG-CDF committee has opted to give the schools water tanks so they can harvest rainy water,’ he added. Meanwhile Mugo also distributed bursary cheques to 3, 209 students enrolled in boarding secondary schools. Each of the learners, he said, was allocated Sh6, 000 to cater for part of school fees. ‘Another bunch of 1, 197 university learners will also get their bursaries today,’ he revealed. Speaking during the same occasion, head teacher of Kamune primary school, Antony Mwangi lauded the desk programme saying some of his learners were forced to use makeshift chairs in classrooms. The desks, he said, will end the challenge and called on the government to provide other needed facilities for the smooth implementation of CBC.
