Briefing Note, February 2023: Men and Boys Key Partners for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C)

In West and Central Africa, Plan International has adapted interventions to address FGM/C into its development, humanitarian and post-crisis programs through partnerships with men and the boys. One such initiative is the “Saving Girls from Female Genital Mutilation” project. This project encourages men and boys to get directly involved in the fight against female genital mutilation and violence against women and girls. This involves intergenerational dialogues, celebrations of alternative initiation rites, the promotion of alternative income-generating activities for women responsible for carrying out the rites of initiation (excision) and public awareness sessions on the consequences of female genital mutilation. About 10,368 men are involved in project activities in 80 districts covered by the project. The project has also identified certain village leaders as champions for the elimination of FGM.
