Seychelles’ President signs Climate World Cup ball, initiative of US teen

Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan has become the first and only African leader to sign the Climate World Cup ball, an initiative of a 13-year-old boy promoting awareness and commitment to the fight against climate change.

Hailing from California, United States, the young boy, Ismachiah Oduwole, paid a courtesy call to the Ramkalawan on Wednesday, where the latter signed on two balls dubbed the Climate World Cup balls.

Each person who signs his balls writes their full name, country of origin, and the plan they have to prevent climate change. Before signing, Ramkalawan outlined that the country has already banned single-use plastics and balloons, is protecting 33 percent of its waters, and is protecting the mangroves amongst other environment protection initiatives.

With a purple marker, Ramkalawan wrote that what he would love would be to “protect the planet for this and the future generations.”

The story of Oduwole started in mid-November 2022, when he learned that following 10 months of savings by his family, he was going to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

When he learned of the trip, he had the idea to bring along two footballs, which he would get attendees at the FIFA World Cup to sign, and in doing so commit to the fight against climate change. In a short interview following the ball signing, Oduwole shared that the idea had roots in a trip he made to Nigeria, where he saw a lot of single-use, non-recyclable plastics.

In his meeting with Ramkalawan, Oduwole shared that so far he has gotten people from more than 28 different countries to sign the first ball.

“When my first ball was fully signed, I thought I should get the next one signed by CEOs of major companies such as Anthony Capuano, the CEO of Marriott Worldwide, Peter Ingram, the CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, Mr. Raj, the CEO of FedEx. Then I was thinking I should get world leaders to sign my football and you are the only country in Africa that is going to sign my football,” he told the president.

He explained that he chose the leader of Seychelles because of the effort that the country is making in the fight against climate change.

“The first is that Seychelles is protecting its bird species. Sometimes people cut down forests to build buildings, houses, and hotels. I see that it is important for you guys to protect your species so that they don’t become extinct, or endangered. You guys also protect the coral reefs and have a Blue Economy. Another reason is that you are protecting fish from overfishing,” said Oduwole.

The 13-year-old wishes to get another world leader, which so far remains a secret, to sign his ball.

It is also his wish to attend the upcoming COP28, which will be held from November 30 to December 12th at the Expo City in Dubai, so as to gather more signatures there.

Canada announces new visa free rules for 13 countries, Seychelles included

Canada has announced visa free travel for eligible travellers from 13 additional countries, including Seychelles.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Sean Fraser, the Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

This applies only to travellers from the 13 countries who have either held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or who currently hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa for up to six months.

The 13 additional countries are Seychelles, Philippines, Morocco, Panama, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Thailand.

Seychellois citizens that are not eligible will still need visas to travel to Canada and must have a Seychelles passport that is valid for six months beyond the period of the intended stay in Canada. Also needed is proof of onward travel (departure) from the northern American country.

Meanwhile, no visa is required to enter Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean but before departure, all visitors must apply for a travel authorisation through the Seychelles Electronic Border System platform.

SPTC bus cards: Seychelles’ public buses go completely cashless from July 1

Cash payment for fares will not be accepted on buses of the Seychelles Public Transportation Corporation (SPTC) as the company is going cashless from July 1, a top official said on Tuesday.

Passengers will now require an SPTC bus card and for the first three months from July 1, it will also be sold on its buses.

SPTC said that the first card will be free of charge but for an additional one, it will cost SCR50 ($4).

Cards can be purchased from the drivers themselves. To encourage people to make the switch to using a card the price of a bus trip during the day for those using cards is SCR10 ($0.7) while for cash payment it is SCR12 ($0.89). The cost of a night trip is SCR15 ($1.1).

“Our decision to go cashless has many reasons, with the main one being the security of our drivers,” said the acting chief executive of SPTC, Jeffy Zialor.

He explained that with no cash in the driver’s possession, it will eliminate the chances of drivers being attacked by people looking to steal money, as has happened in the past.

Another reason was to speed up the boarding process as Zialor said that a passenger’s process of finding the money to pay the driver on the bus takes too long.

“This makes them late but with the cashless procedure and everyone using a card, it will take less than three seconds and it will make it faster and more efficient,” he explained.

SPTC said that it is encouraging everyone to get bus cards that do not have an expiry date and can be reloaded at its headquarters in Victoria and in shops all around the island at SCR30 with two trips already loaded.

“When working on this project, we took into account the visitors and we are in the final stages of working on a special card that will be made available to them,” added Zialor.

Meanwhile, the cards will be on sale at SPTC’s headquarters, along with shops all around the island at $2 (SCR30), with two trips already loaded onto them.

“We want to move closer to our clients and so we have decided to make the process of reloading the cards available everywhere so that people do not have to line up at our offices anymore,” said Zialor.

Plans for SPTC’s buses to go cashless have been in the works for a number of years now, where all the required equipment was already in buses, with a total of 60 percent of bus users already using bus cards.

SPTC says that members of the public can expect even more innovation from the company in the future, with plans already underway to allow passengers to pay for their bus tickets using smartphones.
