BARINGO CENTRAL: Residents of Moigutwo and Kaptumo sub-locations in Baringo Central Sub County are reeling from losses after a suspected leopard attacked and killed more than ten sheep. The incident has sparked fear among the local community as they grapple with the threat posed by the wild animal.
According to Kenya News Agency, Talai Location Chief Thomas Chepyegon confirmed the attacks during a phone conversation on Wednesday. The marauding leopard, known for killing and removing organs from its prey, was reportedly spotted by a resident near Kabirmet Hill after it claimed a sheep in the vicinity. Chepyegon revealed that nearly five households have suffered losses due to the predator, with concerns that the number could increase due to ongoing reports of missing livestock in the area.
The situation has left locals fearing for their safety, especially after the recent discovery of four slaughtered sheep at Kasar village, belonging to two families. “The sheep, which include young ones, were killed at night
in their enclosures when everyone was fast asleep,” Chepyegon reported. In response to the threat, the Chief has contacted Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) in Kabarnet town, seeking urgent intervention.
Chief Chepyegon also advised residents to exercise caution and avoid venturing out at night, recalling a tragic incident two years ago when another leopard attack resulted in the death of a local man and left his neighbor with serious injuries while attempting to protect their livestock.
