Oku brigade commander dismissed

The Commander of the Oku Gendarmerie brigade in the Bui division, North West region, Joh Bolivar Idjandja, has been dismissed following tons of complaints against him.

‘I want to thank you for a job well done. The brigade commander of Oku I reported to you the last time has been removed and sent back to base without a post. This is thanks to you for letting the world know what he was doing in Oku’, an informant told CNA.

In November 2023, CNA exposed the illegal deals orchestrated by the commander wherein, he was accused of arresting people with impunity and asking them to pay huge sums for bail.

He had organized random arrests in 12 out of the 36 villages in Oku, arresting more than 50 individuals per village and demanding between FCFA 500,000 to 2,000, 000 per person before their release.

‘He’s intimidating these individuals saying if the monies are not given, he’s going to send them to Bamenda as amba supporters. These people he’s using as his farm to collect these huge sums of money from are the same
people running away from the Ambas,’ the source added ( Amba is the name Separatist fighters call themselves in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions)

News of his dismissal from the position was received with joy by the Oku population but said he must pay for his damages, ‘If you could help ask those in charge to hold him so he can pay the monies he collected from the Oku people before he leaves, we’ll be very grateful,’ a villager said.
