Migori County has officially launched the highly anticipated Governor’s Cup Football Competition that aims to promote unity among the county residents.
The inaugural event which was held at the Migori stadium and graced by Migori Deputy Governor Joseph Mahiri will also provide a platform for young talented footballers to showcase their talents.
Mahiri said that the tournament will be played in all 40 wards comprising both women’s and men’s teams in the 12 Sub Counties.
He urged the residents to come out in large numbers to wittiness a promising thrilling footballing tournament at the grassroots level aimed at giving hope to football talent that is yet to be unearthed.
Mahiri however, emphasized the importance of the event in fostering unity and talent development within the county adding that the event organizers have dedicated their energy to bring the community together through sporting events.
‘We are ensuring that the success of this tournament is guaranteed by facilitating all the 40 wards teams in
the tournament with balls, tents, and seats, and drinking water to the players to ensure that they are comfortable,’ noted Mahiri.
He disclosed that all the participating teams will be awarded uniforms and balls with the winning team, first runners-up, and third place receiving a sum of Sh50, 000, sh40, 000, and Sh20, 000 respectively.
Suna Central Member of County Assembly (MCA) Samwel O’Brien said that the county has invested well to ensure that the tournament becomes a success.
Brien explained that the tournament will ensure the youths are kept busy with constructive ideas instead of engaging in evil deeds like drug abuse and criminal activities.
The County Assembly Legislature also pointed out that the main goal of the tournament was to tap the youth’s talents to enable them to compete nationally as well as use sports as a means of generating a livelihood.
Similarly, Migori County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Sports, Education, and Gender Rahab Robi acknowledged that the Governor’s Cup will
nurture the talents of our young stars as well as ensure that their passion and dreams in sporting is elevated.
‘This tournament will have no winners nor losers because we aim to advocate for a peaceful county where every resident lives in harmony,’ concluded Robi.
The finals of the Governor’s Cup tournament will be held on December 14 at the Migori Green Stadium whereby the winning teams will be awarded trophies.
