Mandera East residents have availed themselves of a complimentary eye medical screening organized by a team of specialists to prevent various eye-related diseases.
The eye medical camp, known as ‘Restoring Eyesight,’ was facilitated by the Fred Hollows Foundation, aiming to benefit over 500 residents of varying ages.
Dr. Francis Ochieng, an ophthalmologist, noted the prevalence of eye infections in the area due to living conditions and poor hygiene.
He emphasized the diverse range of eye diseases observed, with infections being particularly common.
Mohamed Ali, the County Executive Committee (CEC) for Health Services in Mandera County, expressed gratitude to the Fred Hollows Foundation for timely assistance.
He underscored the challenges faced, attributing them to population growth and unfavorable climatic conditions.
Factors such as excessive solar radiation, a dusty environment, and frequent eye trauma among pastoralist communities often contribute to various eye diseases.
The County government encou
rages all adults with eye problems in the County to take advantage of this opportunity and participate in the free Eye Camp.
The free medical camp is scheduled to run from February 5th to February 9th. Residents expressed their satisfaction and newfound hope for restored eyesight.
