GOVT IN NORTH WEST PROVINCE ON BRINK OF COLLAPSE, SOUTH AFRICAN PARLIAMENT TOLD

CAPE TOWN, The government of North West Province is on the brink of a total collapse because of corruption, an Inter-Ministerial Committee has informed the South African Parliament here.

The startling disclosure emerged during a briefing by the Inter-Ministerial Committee appointed by the Cabinet to assess the governance situation in that province for members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), the upper house of Parliament on Thursday.

The committee painted a picture of a government which is almost dysfunctional. It appeared from the briefing, that the Public Finance Management Act had been completely disregarded in the North West.

Almost all municipal governments are dysfunctional. Twenty of a total of 22 municipalities received disclaimers in their audits, while 12 of them were totally dysfunctional.

According to the committee, the rot was deeply embedded in the Premier’s office.

Technical Task Team member MpumiMpofu said: The Office of the Premier failed to provide administrative leadership to the entire province and was not able to prevent conditions or responsibilities of oversight in this instance coming into question.

The most scathing report was one presented to the Inter-Ministerial Committee by other stakeholders.

The Committee has recommended immediate interventions to stop the rot.

The NCOP will be visiting the province soon to conduct its own oversigh
