Hawassa City spent millions of birr as part of the preparation of this big event
The fifth All Ethiopian Games began on Sunday at the newly-built Hawassa Stadium with spectacular fireworks. All the nine states and two city administrations are represented in this national sports bonanza organized under the model of the Olympics.
In his keynote address Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonen said that organizing such a big national event is important for the future of the country.
“With this kind of modern stadium, now we can boldly say that the country is in a position to organize continental big meets. The facilities are up to the international standard. This must be a forum to bring new talents for the country. We need strong athletes to represent us in the international arena. We expect to gain new faces in this contest,” Deputy Prime Minister Demeke remarked.
Hawassa City spent millions of birr as part of the preparation of this big event. Though the new Hawassa modern stadium was inaugurated during the 38th CECAFA Cup, it was built as the main venue for this All Ethiopian Games.
