ETHIOPIA CALLS FOR RESTRAINT AMIDST RISING TENSION BETWEEN DJIBOUTI, ERITREA

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia has called on all parties for restraint as tension between the neighbouring Red Sea nations of Djibouti and Eritrea intensifies,

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a media statement issued here Sunday that Ethiopia calls for restraint from escalating tensions and resolve differences in peaceful means.

Tensions intensified between the two countries over a disputed border territory after the withdrawal of Qatari peacekeepers following that Gulf nation’s own political crisis with its Arab neighobours, including Saudi Aarabia, Egypt and the United Aarab Emirates (UAE).

The statement said Ethiopia fully supported the statement issued on the situation by the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, including the deployment of a fact-finding mission to the area.

The AU on Saturday called for restraint as tensions intensified between the two countries. AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat called for calm and restraint, and said the AU would send a fact-finding mission to the Djibouti-Eritrea border.

Ethiopia encouraged the United Nations to support this endeavour. The Foreign Ministry release also said that Ethiopia was following closely developments on the matter.
