Authority Floats Tender for 130 Kilometer New Expressway

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) disclosed that it has floated international tender for the construction of a 130-kilometer long Adama-Awash Expressway.

ERA Communication Director, Samson Wondimu told ENA that the new expressway is the extension of Addis Ababa-Adama expressway that connects Ethiopia with Djibouti.

More than 22,000 vehicles cross daily the Adama-Awash road through which are transported over 90 percent import and export of the country, according to the director.

Samson noted that the road which is overburdened was earlier maintained. To ease traffic congestion, the construction of a new 70-kilometer long Adama-Awash-Mieso Expressway will also commence soon.

The expressway will mainly connect Addis Ababa with Djibouti, and Oromia, Harrari, Somali regional states as well as Diredawa administration, it was indicated.

The authority has plans to build 761 kilometers long expressway during the Second Growth and Transformation Plan.

Of this, the construction of 202.5 kilometers Modjo-Hawassa Expressway was launched recently.
