Addis Ababa: Attracting More Local, International Tourists

The government of Ethiopia has been taking several moves to enable the tourism sector play its proper role in the national economy of the country. Particularly, the measures taken over the past few years in this regard are remarkable as the sector has been considered as one of the five pillars in the Home Grown Economic Reform. Accordingly, the nation has given the utmost priority to the sector with a view to develop, renovate and build new destinations across the country. In this regard, the Prime Minister of the country, Abiy Ahmed is key player as he introduced several initiatives to accelerate tourism development. ‘Dine for Sheger’ is one of the successful initiative of the prime minister that brought three grand parks making the capital the best tourist destination. These destinations have become popular for both locals and foreign tourists who seek a beautiful environment, historical insights, and recreational opportunities within the bustling city of Addis Ababa. The new destinations are opened for the tourists in the capital include Unity Park, Entoto Park, Friendship Park, Meskel Square project, Science Museum, among others. One such attraction is Entoto Park, which was initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to enhance the allure of the capital city for both tourists. It is a beautiful and serene natural park that offers visitors the opportunity to explore nature and enjoy breathtaking views of Addis Ababa. As it is situated in the highlands, tourists can enjoy fresh air, lush greenery, and a peaceful atmosphere. The park also provides several hiking and nature trails, allowing visitors to explore the area’s diverse flora and fauna. Unity Park is also one of the busiest destinations for the visitors in the capital. It was initiated in 2018 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as part of his efforts to promote unity and tourism. Visitors to the park can get the opportunity to explore the historical buildings, teeming with attractively landscaped gardens, and learn about Ethiopia’s history. Friendship Park is also a green area where locals and tourists can enjoy, which is beautified with an artificial lake. National Science Museum which is located in the heart of the capital, a new destination that provides a view of history, cultural heritage, natural heritage as well as showcasing science promoting a new era whereby people will experience and envision a hopeful future for all. On other hand, the city’s momentum is set to continue, with additional development projects under way including Adwa Zero Km Mega Project. Moreover, the government revealed that the tourism package, which was a single day in the city, is now extended to 3-4 days due to the increase in the number of tourist destinations in the city. Visiting Addis Ababa also means passing through at Bole International Airport. Therefore, it is a great opportunity for visitors to visit Addis Ababa -as it is political capital of Africa- with its newly built magnificent tourist destinations as well as it has much to offer to tourists especially for transit travelers.
